August 8, 2011

Riot police have clashed with looters at a Currys store in Brixton while six fire engines were dispatched to deal with a blaze at a Footlocker shop in the area as a second night of violence spread to the south of the capital.

Footage posted on YouTube also showed crowds of people attempting to break into a mobile phone shop on the main high street. A gaming store was also looted amid a second night of violence in London.

The fresh rioting, which also took place in the northern areas of Enfield and Walthamstow followed a night of violent protest in Tottenham which was triggered by the fatal shooting of Mark Duggan, 29, on Thursday.

The looting across London was carried out by “small and mobile” groups, a police spokesman said.He said officers had been attacked and a number of police vehicles damaged. As violence spread, around 50 people also gathered in Oxford Circus in central London where damage to property was caused.

Elsewhere, the windscreen of a police vehicle was smashed after groups caused a disturbance in Islington. Items were also stolen from a Tesco store in Ponders End.
