European Space Agency is planning a test to change the course asteroid

August 17, 2011

It’s not “Armageddon,” but it’s close.

The European Space Agency is planning a test to see if it would be possible to change the course of an asteroid headed for Earth, The Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

The mission is reminiscent of the Hollywood blockbuster “Armageddon,” starring Bruce Willis. In the movie, Willis and his team try to blow up an asteroid on a path for Earth.

The mission, called Don Quijote, involves firing an ‘impactor’ satellite into a ‘test’ asteroid in 2015 to see if it knocks the space rock off course, The Mail said.

The ESA is currently eying the 1,600-foot-wide 99942 Apophis asteroid, which has a one in 250,000 chance of ramming into Earth in 2036, the paper reported.
